Stump Grinding

Why You Should Remove Tree Stumps From Your Yard

Leaving a stump behind isn’t harmless—it’s a problem that gets worse over time. What looks like a small inconvenience today can turn into costly damage, safety risks, and ongoing headaches.

1. Stumps Attract Pests and Decay

A leftover stump becomes a breeding ground for termites, ants, beetles, and fungus. As it rots, it draws pests that can spread to nearby trees, landscaping, and even your home.

2. They Ruin Your Curb Appeal

Even one stump can make an otherwise clean yard look unfinished and neglected. Removing it instantly improves the appearance of your property and can increase its value.

3. They’re a Safety Hazard

Tree stumps are easy to trip over and dangerous for children, guests, and pets. They also make mowing difficult and can damage your equipment.

4. Stumps Can Grow Back

Many stumps continue to send up new shoots, creating multiple small trees and spreading roots underground. What starts as one stump can quickly turn into a bigger problem.

5. You’re Losing Valuable Yard Space

That stump is taking up space you could use for grass, landscaping, a patio, or a clean open yard. Removing it gives you back full use of your property.

Bottom Line

Leaving a stump might seem like the easy option—but it often leads to more problems and higher costs down the road. Removing it now protects your property, improves your yard, and eliminates future issues.

Don’t wait until it becomes a bigger problem—take care of it now.

How Long Does It Take To Grind A Stump

It depends on size of the stump, age and type of wood. Typically it takes about an hour to grind a 30 inch stump.

Will left over roots start another tree?

Yes, some tree species like

Poplar / Cottonwood

Willow

Elm

Maple (especially silver/red)

Sweetgum

Tree of Heaven (very aggressive) roots will try to survive and sprout new shoots even when the tree is cut down. Although some species will not. If the stump is in your yard and you mow regularly this shouldn't be a problem but if it's in a landscaped area we may need to treat the area to kill the root completely.

How fast can you come out?

It depends on the season and volume of work we have. We try to get to our customers within 7 days or less but if it's a rush we will try to fit you in sooner.

Is stump grinding dangerous?

Yes, the machine spins a cutting wheel at a high rpm basically chewing up the stump and spitting out mulch. Debris can be tossed many feet at a high velocity causing bodily harm if it strikes a person. Stump Busters recommends people stay away from the work area while we grind your stumps.

Stump Busters is owned by an 8 year Army Veteran who believes Integrity isn't just a word it's how we do business.

Can we build on the site where you grind the stump?

Stump Busters recommends you have the stump and root system completely removed with excavation as part of your site prep. You don't want decaying wood underneath your structural foundation. Stump Busters grinders only take care of the top 6 to 12 inches which could leave wood to decay later.
